Home charging

Charge smarter. Pay less.

For most EV drivers, home charging is the foundation of everyday electric life. Getting it right — the right charger, the right tariff, the right setup — is where the real savings happen.

Why home charging changes everything

Charging on the public network is convenient when you need it, but expensive as a daily habit. Rapid chargers in particular can cost as much per mile as running a petrol car — or more.

Home charging flips that. You plug in when you get home, wake up with a full battery and — if you’re on the right energy tariff — pay a fraction of what public charging costs.

The combination of a smart charger and a dedicated EV energy tariff is where the biggest savings are found. It’s also where Ohme’s technology makes a real difference.

Charge overnight, cheaply
Smart EV tariffs offer off-peak rates from around 5–8p/kWh — a fraction of the standard rate or public charging costs.

Wake up with a full battery
Set your target charge and departure time. Your charger does the rest — automatically finding the cheapest windows overnight.

Total control and visibility
Track exactly what you spend on charging, set budgets and schedules, and monitor your carbon footprint — all from your phone.

7.4 kW — fast enough, safe for daily use
A standard home wallbox adds around 30–40 miles of range per hour. That’s more than most drivers need overnight, without putting stress on the battery.

Smart tariffs that work while you sleep

A smart EV tariff pairs with your smart charger to find the cheapest overnight charging windows automatically. These are the main options available in the UK right now.

Intelligent Octopus Go
Octopus Energy
~7p / kWh off-peak
Flexible 6-hr window: 11:30pm – 5:30am
Widely regarded as the best EV tariff in the UK. Native Ohme integration. Dynamically schedules your charging within the overnight window to find the cheapest slots.

EDF GoElectric
EDF
~9p / kWh off-peak
Fixed window: 12am – 5am
Straightforward off-peak tariff compatible with any EV charger and smart meter.

OVO Charge Anytime
OVO Energy
Varies / off-peak windows
Smart-scheduled via OVO app
Native Ohme integration. Smart scheduling finds cheaper windows based on grid demand — similar concept to Intelligent Octopus Go.

A note on tariff rates: off-peak rates change with the energy market and vary by region. The figures above are approximate published rates as of autumn 2026 — always get a personalised quote from the provider before switching. The comparison that matters is your total annual bill (including day-rate usage for the rest of your home), not just the off-peak rate alone.

If a charger is included in your deal — check what you’re getting

Salary sacrifice schemes, leasing deals, dealers and car manufacturers sometimes bundle a home charger as part of the package. That can be great value. But it’s worth understanding what it means in practice.

Not all bundled chargers are smart chargers — and a basic charger that simply draws power at a fixed rate, rather than scheduling around cheaper overnight windows, can significantly limit your access to the best energy tariffs.

Smart chargers like Ohme’s Home Pro integrate directly with tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go — meaning the charger and the energy supplier work together to find the cheapest charging slots automatically. A basic charger can’t do this. You can still set a timer, but you lose the dynamic scheduling that makes smart tariffs most effective.

Before accepting a bundled charger, it’s worth asking: is it a smart charger? Which tariffs does it integrate with? And does the saving on the charger outweigh the potential saving on cheaper overnight charging over the life of the contract?

We can help you work through that question as part of your wider vehicle and mobility advice.

Our recommended charger: Ohme

We’ve partnered with Ohme because we genuinely believe they make the best smart home EV charger available in the UK. Their integration with smart energy tariffs — particularly Intelligent Octopus Go — is the deepest in the market, and the result for drivers is a simpler, cheaper charging experience.

Why we recommend Ohme

Native Intelligent Octopus integration
The Ohme app communicates directly with Octopus Energy’s API to find and use the cheapest charging windows — including bonus surplus periods that go even below the standard off-peak rate.

Set it and forget it
Tell Ohme your target battery level and when you want to leave. It handles the rest — scheduling automatically around your cheapest overnight windows.

Full cost visibility
The app tracks your charging costs in detail — by session, by day, by month. You always know exactly what you’re spending.

A note on our Ohme partnership: We recommend Ohme because we believe they make the best smart home EV charger in the UK — that’s why we approached them about a partnership, not the other way around. If you purchase an Ohme product through our link, we receive a referral fee. That doesn’t change the advice we give — we’d tell you the same thing regardless. But we believe in being completely transparent about how we work, and that includes being upfront when a commercial relationship exists.
